We all have those odd summer jobs that don’t quite get done in time, leaving you to tip-toe around the wet and rainy weather in winter. However, when winter comes, you need to be aware of the potential issues the damp and cold can cause when painting your garage floor. If you’re looking to protect your garage floor against wear and tear this winter, consider these three tips.

1. Consider the weather conditions

Factors such as temperature and humidity can affect your paint’s viscosity and quality. When you’re applying floor paint, these elements have more of an impact due to the paint’s location.

Under ten degrees celsius, the evaporation of water from the paint film will slow down the drying process and reduce the structural integrity of your work. In turn, the paint quality will reduce and last for shorter periods.

It might be best to leave paint jobs until the summer to ensure optimal results. However, there are other longer-lasting options for garage floor coatings available that can help.

2. Look into your options

When it comes to choosing a garage floor coating, paint is the first that comes to mind. However, this may not be the best choice.

Floor paint requires additional layers that need 24-hour periods between them to dry. Plus, they are sensitive to moisture and low temperatures and offer reduced resistance to oils and grease.

For a more robust alternative that comes with a ten-year guarantee, choose Fusion’s MMA Garagetuff. Unlike other resins such as epoxy, it is fast to fit and offers excellent resistance to UV, moisture and temperature.

At Fusion Coatings, we can install a full floor in a single day at -25 degrees Celsius, providing you up to four millimetres of thickness.

3. Plan ahead

Remember that when installing any garage floor coating, you’ll need to move objects outside and keep them dry and safe.

If you’re painting with two or three coats, schedule in a drying time of around 24-hours between each coat.
