A garage floor is a heavy-duty surface that takes quite a beating over its lifetime. It’s a surface that gets walked on, driven over, has things spilt on it and is generally going to be a surface that needs to be resilient enough to take all of that.

So, to increase the longevity of your garage floor, it’s a good idea to cover it with a heavy-duty material that can withstand the wear and tear you’d expect garage flooring to experience.

You have a few options when it comes to covering a garage floor, and we’re going to cover them for you here. By the end, you should have an understanding of which garage floor solution is best suited to your needs.

Standard garage floor paint

Garage floor paint is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a specialist paint designed for use on a garage floor, and therefore, it’s a bit more hard-wearing than a tin of Dulux that you can pick up from your local DIY store.

There are some definite advantages of using garage floor paint. Preparation of the area and laying down of the paint is simple. A power wash of the floor to remove debris is all you really need, and once dry, you can just paint the area.

However, garage floor paint, while hard-wearing, simply doesn’t last for very long, especially in high traffic areas. Within a year, your paint may be peeling.

If you’re going to use garage floor paint, we’d recommend using it in a low traffic area, but even then, considering the maintenance and how often you’d need to repaint your garage floor, we’d recommend using something else.

This could be:

Epoxy floor coating

Put simply, an epoxy floor coating is an epoxy resin that’s mixed with a polyamine hardener. The two substances have to be mixed together before being applied to the floor. Once they are mixed, you don’t have much time to apply the coating.

While an epoxy floor coating has some similarities to paint (you might have to pour or roll it onto the substrate), you shouldn’t confuse it with epoxy paint, which is a completely different substance.

Epoxy floor coatings are thicker and more hard-wearing than paint. Once epoxy floor coatings harden, they chemically bond with the floor and form a thick, protective layer.

Although an epoxy floor coating is durable, deals with high traffic and is resistant to chemical spills and oil, it’s typically only guaranteed for a year.

MMA Resin

Methyl Methacrylate, otherwise known as MMA resin, is an acrylic resin, and here at Fusion Coatings, we are proud to say that we have one of the very best MMA resin coatings in GarageTuff.

MMA resin outperforms both paint and epoxy resin coatings. It sets hard so it is extremely durable, and while it is also resistant to chemical spills, high traffic, oils and other substances, it is also highly resistant to UV degradation.

Our GarageTuff MMA resin is specifically designed with garages in mind. It can be applied and hardened or dry in as little as 45 minutes, meaning that your garage floor is ready to use on the same day.

GarageTuff MMA resin is available in a number of different decorative colour blends, meaning that not only is it a practical and durable coating for your garage floor, it’s also an attractive option that means your garage floor looks good and performs well.

Also, unlike both epoxy resin and garage floor paint, our GarageTuff MMA resin is guaranteed for a full 10 years.

Key takeaways

Clearly, not all coverings for a garage floor are created equal, and while some are better than others, there’s a clear winner when it comes to what you should cover your garage floor with.

MMA resin is more hardwearing, more durable, resistant to chemical and oil spills, resistant to UV degradation and, if you use our GarageTuff MMA resin, it comes in a number of different finishes and is guaranteed for 10 years.
